Technical advice

The basis of the achievement of the stencil

We present the user manual stencils. Although the overall presentation takes the guise of a small decorative frieze, the realization wall stencil strictly obeys the same principles.

Always prepare marks on the support, go too fast just spoil the decor.
Although the stencil technique is simple, decor is successful if and only if you put your care: care for the positioning of markers, the use of a non wet paint, the use of suitable brush, respect drying time, the protection of the surroundings when using the bomb, simply keep your hands clean!

!

1/ Prepare the stencil

An easy time but exercise may take time depending on the level of complexity of the stencil

It is easy to perforate a stencil. The only tool required is a cutter. The stencil is flat on a smooth surface ; You remove the pre-cut parts.

When buying stencils, observe the notation stencils stars. A very starry stencil is harder to use than a little star stencil. A small stencil is more difficult to use than a large stencil.

2/ Create positioning pins

A step not to be overlooked

In the case of a frieze, place marks on the support and extend a Scotch painter "straights", you can locate to this line. For isolated patterns, calculate the location based on the margins on either side of the stencil. Take a little time for proper positioning, the composition will be more pleasing to the eye.

3/ Position the stencil

Beware of bridges!

Carefully lift the perforated stencil to not break bridges in the case of delicate stencils. Align the mark on the scotch if you make a frieze. Blot the area gently with the stencil brush or a dry cloth to ensure a good adhesion to the substrate.

4/ Prepare colors

Aiming fairly dry thin layer ...

Prepare the color with a brush on a pallet or a substitute for paddle (disposable plates are perfect for this). Take a little color with stencil brush and wipe it on the pallet or on a cloth to remove excess paint, you will avoid impasto or drips.

It is better to spend several thin coats to achieve a dense color rather than one thick that could crack or drooling layer.

Try it first on paper to make sure the brush is not too wet.

5/ Dab the surface

Patience and time are better than force and rage ...

The brush must stencil stamp vertically relative to the surface or in a circular movement. The gesture should be light and regular for even application.

Apply on the entire surface control if there is no lack of color, in this case, make another pass of the brush.

6/ Remove the stencil

Dry paint medium

When you are assured that the motive was fully painted and the paint is almost dry, lift the stencil carefully not to break bridges and immediately replace the stencil on the cover sheet.

7/ Play the shadows and lights

For more advanced!

When the paint dries, you can make a work of light and shadow to enhance the perception of volumes. Prepare a deeper shade for shadows and choose a light orientation (usually a sham light up and the left one is coming or, in the case near a window, simulating the arrival of light from the window). The edge of the light remains the original color, the edge is highlighted in the shade of a stroke.

Remember to vary the thickness of the brush, your design will be more patterned.

8/ Maintain the stencil

For a renewed use of the stencil

Your stencil can serve several to forty times if used in optimal conditions.

These conditions consist in applying the stencil to paint on a surface dustless , in the use of acrylic paint, stencil being cleaned by gently dabbing a paper or a damp cloth immediately after use, after been returned to its original media or stuck flat on a plastic bag. When the stencil is not in use , be sure to store it flat in a cool place and away from light and dust .

After dozens of application the decal stencil power may decrease. Nevertheless, it is possible to further extend the stencil use repositionable glue .

The professional aim for a balance between work time and time spent to ensure the longevity of the stencil. Properly maintain the stencil takes time and professional chooses to renew more often his stencils than the amateur. The amateur will keep longer his stencils by devoting more attention but inevitably time-consuming care.
