The Moresque designate a stylized motif of Islamic origin, consisting of long rods extended by a sheet set without naturalist concern. Introduced in Europe during the Renaissance, they were recreated by Western decorators.
The patterns proposed in the Moresque atmosphere are mainly inspired by engravings of the book of Francisque Pellegrin, Patrons de broderie façon arabique et ytalique, printed in Paris in 1530. These embroidery portraits were for binding, the armory, printing, lace ... Originally from Florence, Pellegrin came around 1525 to work at Fontainebleau castle site under the direction of Rosso. By his book of engravings of Moresque, he contributed to the introduction of the Moresque in France and its wide distribution. Other decorators also drawn Moresque: Jacques Androuet du Cerceau in his book Livre contenant passements de moresques très utile à toutes gens exerçant ledict art but also Balthazar Sylvius, Peter Flotner or Virgil Solis.
